12 (11hrs) in the greater Calgary Area

First off, I must apologize for not getting all 13 images. Both of my sons play on the same hockey team, I'm a coach, and we had a 7:15am game. I forgot my camera in the van and couldn't leave the bench during the game. So, I started at 9am.

9am - Airdrie Alberta - quick grocery store stop

10am - fuel up at starbucks

11am - it's a shopping day. at least there are a few stores for the guys.

12am - hockey life store

1pm - lunch (however terrible it may be...)

2pm - my little girl loves shopping. especially when there's mirrors

3pm - driving home to Strathmore

4pm - hitting the local skating pond

5pm - still playing pond hockey

6pm - supper. (probably one of the worst days for us - nutritionally speaking)

7pm - a movie for the family, and one for my wife and I

8pm - finish the day by trying a new beer.

8am - Peaceful breakfast :)

10am - Another warm day! And it's snowing like crazy.

11am - Back in the car after finally meeting up with everyone, now off to the trailhead

12pm - Skiing along the Goat Creek trail, starting from Canmore, heading to Banff

1pm - Lunch break at the first bridge

2pm - Crossing the second big bridge - still snowing like crazy

3pm - Still snowing! (the Chariot behind me is covered now)

4pm - Skiing with Finn on my front. Nearly there.

5pm - Finally got to the carpark (18km later), then hike up the hill to the Banff Hot Springs.

6pm - I opt for hot chocolate instead of hot springs (too dehydrated!)

7pm - Car shuffling complete, we all head back to Canmore

8pm - Hanging out on the sofa with the boys

Due to the increase of worthless slimy dirty rotten scum trying to sell their wares or get link to their sites on this blog, I've opted to turn ON comment moderation. I hope this doesn't come as too much of a headache for you all, and I will try to respond very quickly to the comments left. When a comment is posted, I get an email, and I can approve the comment from that email. Since I carry mobile computing devices, I'm able to post a legitimate comment within a few hours at the most, usually within minutes. I've had to do the same to my personal blog, and nothing gets under my skin like some dirtbag trying to cash in on the effort that I as blogger put into each post, to drum up their stupid business. To me, it's borderline minor theft.

Personally I love comments on my blog. I love to hear what others think about the content that I put forward. But don't try and use the efforts that we put out blogging, creating interesting content and generating traffic, to sell your crap. Spam commenters, you disgust me and you are so done leaving your smelly crap on this here blog! Eat that!

We now return to regular scheduled programming.

10am - a game of peek-a-boo

11am - I was doing a family portrait session today. We were supposed to drive to a location down this road. No problem, we improvised.

12pm - just wrapping up the shoot. Saw lots of these, and many more downed trees.

1pm - 2 hockey bags, 1 Xtracycle, and off to skating practice we go. 1 less minivan......

2pm - was a good practice.

3pm - late lunch. Homemade tomato soup, homemade garlic croutons. Incredible.

4pm - all 3 kids in the cart at the grocery store.

5pm - placed an order for a particular wine. Realized I've never tried Bourbon. I'll need a few more "samples" to make up my mind.

6pm - driving to some friends for dinner. Road side stop, contrast caught my eye.

7pm - after dinner, playing with the kids on the floor.

8pm - kids in bed, Heineken on tap, in the garage, surrounded by my bikes. Ah, the un-wind.

Okay, welcome back to the 12hrs in photos project.

If you’ve just stumbled across this blog and want in, leave a comment, or email me (you can get that in my profile I think) and we’ll sign you up as a contributor to the blog so you can take part.

There are a few changes to the project, but it will still retain its original idea, or even be closer to its original idea.

First a quick rundown/refresher of what the project is.

12 hours in photos. A picture an hour, from 8am to 8pm, all on the same day, from all over the world.

Totaling 13 photos, you start by taking a picture that would be show what your day looks like at 8am, your local time zone. Then 9 am. Then 10 and so on and so on. You can certainly take several pictures, pick the best, but the idea is to share one single photo that best describes what you are doing at that time, on that day. You, viewing my photos, could see what a day in my life looked like in Southern Alberta. We, viewing your photos, can see what a day looks like in Alaska, or New Zealand, or California or wherever it is that you are lucky enough to call home. The unifying theme is that these photos are all taken on the same day. It’s kind of a means of documenting what happened in the world on one particular day, while taking part in producing that document and showing what happened in your part of the world. It’s fun to know that when the hour hand is pointed up, you are snapping photos with a bunch of other people, some of them maybe thousands of miles away, and you’re doing it for the same reason. You’ll be able to see what they were taking pictures of when you were taking your pictures. And visa versa. If you scan through the blog, you’ll notice that we’ve been putting the time above the photo, and then also a brief description of the photo. Let’s keep with this theme.

Now, I am going to tighten the clamps on the project a bit. Here’s how:

· If you can’t participate in the project on a particular day, please refrain from posting, and simply wait until the next time the project rolls around. The idea of the project is the unity that it creates. A huge part of that unity is the fact that we're all doing it on the same day. This is not just a place to dump pictures of a random day in your life.
· Please stick to the format. Obviously if you missed an hour or something, it’s not going to be a huge deal, and slight variations are okay, but before posting, ask yourself, how far does this stray from the intent of the project. Be warned, if it’s too far off, the post will be removed.
· If you can’t make the project or the day doesn’t work for you, please don’t submit a post saying that. While we wish you could have made the project, we want the reading of the blog as a project to be clean and consistent.
· Post only one photo for each hour. That will be a total of 13 photos. I know that sometimes you get like 7 great shots in a matter of minutes, all different, all excellent. In this case, pick the one that you want to share to represent that hour.

I know this seems very harsh, but in the theme of the project, I think it’s for the best.

Now, Eero came up with a great idea, and that was to select 4 dates throughout the year, and have the project run on those dates. I love that idea. So, here are 4 dates that will carry us through the next year of the project. Dates may change for the year following this, but for this year, here are 4 random dates. Actually I’ve given two on the weekend, and two during the week, so they’re a little less than random but whatever.

· October 17th, 2009 - Saturday
· January 5th, 2010 – Tuesday
· April 17th, 2010 – Saturday
· August 12th, 2010 – Thursday

So there you have it. Looks like we’re ready to roll. Please' if you know of others that might be interested in participating in the 12hrs project, have them email me - jeromebikeATgmailDOTcom. The more the merrier! I’ll add them as a contributor, and we’ll all get to enjoy their photos.

52 Minutes in Photos - Anchorage, AK

I decided that these images were too cool not to share! As I mentioned before, I am an aviation weather forecaster in Anchorage, AK. Because I work in a windowless room, miles from the airport that I forecast for most, I use "webcams" strategically placed around the city to get an idea of what the weather is doing in places that I am not.

The camera that these images were captured from is especially useful for monitoring the formation of fog over Cook Inlet... which often develops when the sun rises. Not only do these images show how fast fog can take over, they also show the full moon... something I have never seen on the web cams before! I was amazed at how quickly the moon moved in to - and out of - the picture.

8am. I've been at work for over 1hr already. This is my desk. It's where the magic happens. 9AM. Parts lists waiting for review. Not as exciting as the colors make them look.

10AM. Coffee with Cory. I think I'm one of only a handful of people on earth who can actually understand him. He is a neat guy though. And, he's my friend.
11AM. A fixie that distracts me on my desk. Even made it to FGG once.

12PM. My friends, those are indeed real vegetables, just as foil wrapper said.

1PM. My addiction.

2PM. Someone driving by the office just as the blizzard started rolling in.

3PM. A shop tour looking for some parts.

4PM. Snow starting to stick to the office windows.

Kurt's Pugsley grin!

No 12hr in photos for me today...*sigh*...I had some good reasons though. I'm headed to Baja early next week and I had to finish up a big pile of work in the AM, had festive lunch with a friend and then helped my buddy Kurt build up his Pugsley.

Because we had a pretty good snowstorm the Pugsley build effort started at 2pm and wrapped up at 10pm. Of course there was a 2hr "test ride" in there somewhere, but that's essential when you are taking a bike on a trip far away from the nearest LBS.

We'll do a 12hr in photos down in Baja. It will be much more scenic than shots of the inside of my apartment!

Juneau, Alaska

To add to the pictures of bicycle riding in the frozen Northland ...

9 a.m. The view at breakfast. Yawn.

10 a.m. The trip to the post office is becoming a daily chore for me. I don't mind at all. :-)

11 a.m. Riding into the Mendenhall Valley on the Dredge Lake trails, mouth agape.

12 p.m., heading back toward the highway on some nondescript road. Mouth still agape.

1 p.m.: Life's good between Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.

2 p.m.: An interpretive photo of the Hard North Wind. It brought in a blast of frigid air from Canada, gusting right in my face. The temperature was probably about 25 degrees. The windchill couldn't have been warmer than 5.

3 p.m.: Alpenglow on the distant mountains.

4 p.m.: The last bit of daylight and a really bright planet over Auke Rec. I'm not sure which planet it was - a bright one.

5 p.m.: The self-portrait I took after my sad attempts to take a photo of the moon. I don't have a proper camera for night shots, so you'll just have to take my word that it was the most amazing full moon I have ever seen. The Hard North Wind was tearing clouds of snow off the mountains. As the moon rose, it illuminated the ridgelines with this soft, intense glow, almost as bright as daylight. I couldn't take my eyes off the moon, which was rough because I was back in the traffic of Juneau proper and it was rush hour.

6 p.m.: Having dinner with Geoff, our friend Christina and a couple of our parasitic cats.

7 p.m.: Trying to figure out what's going on in my friends' children's play. At this point, my head was nearly as fuzzy as this picture.

8 p.m.: For seven-hour rides in the freezer, there's no better recovery food than a huge spread of Christmas cookies.

Here's 12 hours in and around Edmonton. I'm missing one picture because I was working but I think you'll still get the idea.0800 - meeting friends at the diner for breakfast. Poor fellow had a rough night.

0900 - Diner. Friends. Bike.

1000 - Preparing to build a new front mudflap out of a yogurt container for those near useless "quick release" fenders.

1100 - Brief test ride in the snow for the new mudflap. Better than no mudflap.

1200 - making lunch

~1300 - Neighbours roof, a little later than 1300 actually, I took a nap after lunch (the way they do in pre-school).

1500 - Pilot costume. A little early to dress for a 1700 flight but it's cool because the earlier I get ready the more time I can spend at the coffee shop before work.

1600 - My cup has wings because I'm a pilot.

1700 - Or a little after 1700. It's tough to take pictures inside the cockpit during a night flight. So this is the moon from 19 000' on the way to Fort McMurray.

No "12 Hours" for me today...

Today didn't quite go as planned... I was supposed to have the day off but ended up getting called in to work because of a sick co-worker. I'm Carrie... an aviation meteorologist in Anchorage, AK and I am brand new to the group and excited to be a part of the project. I'll do a 12 hour shoot ASAP! In the meantime, here are a few images that exemplify my day...

Klyuchevskoy volcano, on the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. Ash from Russian volcanoes enters Alaskan air space a handful of times each year and can be a significant impact to air traffic. This picture was taken on Dec 8th and sent to me by a Russian volcanologist.

Kluchevskoy volcano today... there was a bit of confusion as to whether or not the volcano erupted. The above image from a monitoring webcam just shows a large steam plume.

Shall we pick a date for installment number 3 of the 12 hrs project? There are several new members and I think it’s about 21 people currently. If we were all to make it, it would make the whole project that much more fun.

Anyway, I’ll throw the date of Friday December 12th out there. If it’s too soon, please let me know. I was thinking that it’s not so close to the Christmas that we’ll all be running with last minute preparations, and a Friday seems to be a good day to take pictures.

Let me know what you all think. If you have a suggestion for a different date, let us know. If Friday works, please confirm.

Same dig as before. 13 pictures starting at 8am until 8 pm your local time zone. As close to on the hour as possible, but really that’s not too important. It just nice to document the day in a progressive manner.

Let me know if you have any suggestions or further input.

Again, I certainly enjoy being a part of this and love sharing in a fun project with so much talent.

I'm a bit late on the draw myself. I missed Saturday, so I waited until my weekend rolled around. Here is 12 hours of Friday, May 9, in Juneau, Alaska:

7 a.m.: Breakfast on the porch.

8 a.m.: Heading out with a Spring King Salmon Derby ticket in my pocket.

9 a.m.: Lots of people on the rocks, hoping to hit the jackpot.

10 a.m.: This vessel is cool - a buoyant bicycle (tandem no less!)

11 a.m.: Brian gets a few hard hits but no bites. It's a slow day for salmon fishing.

12 p.m.: Driving back, denied. I have to let go of my dream of fresh grilled King for lunch. "Well, it was a beautiful day to be on the water," Brian said. Too true.

1 p.m.: Alternative lunch - big tuna salad and all the strawberries I can eat.

2 p.m.: Going for a walk with my friend Geoff K. and his baby girl Paige.

3 p.m. Paige starts to fuss and it's time for Dad to turn around. Time for me to strap on the snowshoes and head high.

4 p.m.: Reaching the top of the Douglas Island ridge.

5 p.m.: Heading down, still walking.

6 p.m. Going home.

Today was a very boring, sadly typical Saturday for me. Working on my house renovation. Blah.

8am - A very rare day when I can see the ceiling above my bed at 8.

Welcome to Vancouver! I awakened to rain...a typical scene here in BC.....quite a change from the snow we are supposed to have here in Calgary tomorrow!

Yes!!!! We made it! And the rain is now gone...replaced instead by sun & the beautiful scenery of the surrounding Gulf Islands.

8am - breakfast of champions.

9am - load up for an errand running adventure.

10am - haircuts, farmer's market, electronics recycling.

11am - electronics recycling was closed. This was on the way. I've been VERY curious about train grafitti. This guy tagged the whole car!

12pm - local bike shop, lunch and then...

1pm - U6 soccer.

2pm - outside the office supply store to buy printer paper I saw this rare for my town rig. (Hi Jodi!) Yes, our large big box toy store has no webkinz. The mall does, ugh.

3pm - back home. New for us this year is a CSA. Here's the first shipment which we picked up at the farmer's market.

4pm - first lawn mowing of 2008.

5pm - standing in the shower thinking.

6pm - supper. Dessert, rather.

7pm - Quadre: French Horn Emsemble.

I'm anxious for another 12hrs, anyone else? With the weather changing, sun shining and birds starting to sing, I'm in the mood to see what's going on in all of your parts of the world.

There was some mention of putting the project up on flickr. What are all of your thoughts? I kind of like the idea of the blog, just because I think it's easier to see all of the entries at once, but that may just be my ignorance to using flickr to it's fullest. Let me know what you all think.

Once we pick a date, I'll email everyone with the particulars. Do you know anyone else who might be interested in participating? Have them email me (jeromebike at gmail dot com) and I'll add them as a contributor. We've already got several new members that weren't involved with the last one, and that's exciting!

It all seemed like a normal family car camping trip. Set up the tent, unpack the car. This campground was in a particularly overdeveloped part of the Maine coast. Lots of places had video arcades and swimming pools. We felt lucky to have found one that felt pretty much like a state park but was still close enough to the beach to bike with our 16 month old. We started walking down the road.

At first it was like any other standard campground. But then we began to notice the little people.

Zib zib zebra. My son insisted that these zebras live in our campsite. The owner ok'd it as long as we put them back. As strange as it may sound, I wouldn't have dreamed of putting them back anywhere other than exactly where they came from. These critters were proof that if you do anything well it can feel right. Walking around was actually kind of amazing, not because of these creatures. Normally I see such things strewn around lawns willy-nilly and roll my eyes. But the person who had placed these had really found their places. It is the first really good use of lawn ornaments I have ever seen. Seriously.

This is the reason we reached 6 degrees Celsius (43F) today. 3 days ago it was -24 C (-11F) in the morning. The Chinook is always accompanied with a Chinook arch. These arches can look spectacular. This picture doesn't do justice to what I was today. Just gives an idea. The real deal must have been about 100 kms long.
